SIMULATOR TRAINING WITH HOGGY

Hoggy the dressage simulator is used to make the rider more aware of their own body, providing the opportunity to focus on looking at rider symmetry, highlighting areas of tension & weakness, improving clarity of aids and teaching the rider to carry themselves correctly.

Since Hoggy’s arrival at Sparrow Oast in 2013, he has not put a hoof wrong. In fact, the handsome black steed’s consistent performance and exemplary stable manners have surpassed all expectations and he is a clear favourite amongst the yard’s clientele.

But Hoggy is not your regular schoolmaster. And his riders are not all advanced – or otherwise – dressage riders.

Hoggy was bought by dressage trainer Nicola Bell as an investment, to provide a unique and valuable training experience for riders.

Clients from a diverse range of backgrounds and capabilities benefit from the sessions which, unlike regular lessons, enable the trainer to focus exclusively on the rider, without the distraction of how the horse may be performing. And his contribution to the business and impact on its clients is without doubt immeasurable.

Nicola’s wealth of knowledge of rider biomechanics enables her to look at the fine details that can often be overlooked in a rider. As a Grand Prix rider herself she knows how important small details can be. If for example one side of the body is not firing up correctly this can affect stability, asymmetry and of course will have an effect on the horse.

Having a Studio next door to the simulator enables us to look at clients off the horse to see how the body is functioning. This can often provide lightbulb moments for riders who can suddenly understand why they may be experiencing particular difficulties on the horse.

Hoggy is an incredibly vital tool for any rider to improve awareness of their own body. By using Hoggy we can devote the entire session to YOU!. By removing the “real horse” with all its own complexities you can fully focus on your own body and mind.

We will work together to look at symmetry, function and balance. With Nicola’s huge wealth of knowledge, we can explore the tiniest detail that can result in making huge differences both on and off the horse.

Hoggy

For those not familiar with Hoggy, he is a state-of-the-art dressage simulator made by Racewood,  the world’s leading designer and manufacturer of Equestrian Simulators. As Hoggy is a dressage simulator his paces may feel slightly more expressive and he has the ability to help riders learn flying changes, leg-yield, shoulder-in and even half halts.

However, ALL riders, from any discipline, benefit from this training by focusing on improving their awareness of what their own bodies are doing. This can be achieved through practicing transitions between the paces. By fine-tuning the rider’s balance, postural awareness, contact and correct application of the aids, Hoggy has played a pivotal role in progressing rider development and bolstering confidence both in and out of the saddle.

The beauty of Hoggy

I have had Hoggy lessons for several years and it has helped me identify areas within my position where I can make an improvement. The beauty of Hoggy is that I can solely focus on myself and better understand how I am influencing my horse. Areas of weakness are corrected in sessions using tools such as kinesiology tape and bands, as welll as learning how to activate muscles prior to riding, all of which have helped me to sit in a more correct symmetrical position. I have found the greatest benefit of Hoggy is being able to ride my own horse straight after and apply what I have learnt from my Hoggy session.

Hoggy is the most sympathetic…

Hoggy is the most sympathetic, confidence building, technique perfecting horse available to anyone wanting to improve their position in the saddle. Nicola is an expert of the subtle little changes in your body that can make a massive positive impact on both your physical and mental way of riding.

I find Hoggy invaluable…

I find Hoggy invaluable for two key things. Firstly, for working on my posture. He really pinpoints issues and areas of improvement around balance and position. Nicola then coaches me on what I need to change and as importantly, how to make those changes. On Hoggy, I find I can totally focus on trying to make these changes without having to think about riding my horse at the same time. I can practice and then, when I ride my horse, I can focus in on these corrections.

Secondly, I have sessions on Hoggy for working on specific aspects of riding. I have recently worked on half halts and also the aids for changes and tempis. Hoggy gives great feedback (and sometimes I have no idea that my body is doing what it’s doing!) and again, Nicola explains clearly exactly what to do to achieve a better result. Again I find when I get on my horse I have benefited from what I’ve learnt.

The exercises Nicola recommends as a result of what she sees in the Hoggy sessions really help and I use them before I ride. She also uses bands to improve posture – which we also transfer to when I am riding my horse. These are brilliant – they really do help me to correct my position. I have found them particularly useful to ensure I am evenly balanced and also for my hand position specifically.

I have been surprised at how effective the sessions are and what they identify. I have learnt a lot and this is now a regular part of my training.

Hoggy and Nicola are amazing

Hoggy – and Nicola – are amazing and have helped me enormously. A real eye-opener when I first went, but they have helped me soften my lower back and straighten out my twists. Nicola has such a great eye and perceptiveness of what will help. My horse says thank you and congratulations Hoggy!

Hoggy gave me the opportunity

Hoggy gave me the opportunity for me to work on myself, increase my body awareness and play with alterations within my seat position, all without effecting my horse. As a Dressage rider it is important to have to space to solely focus on myself. We owe it to our horses to be the best version of ourselves.

My Hoggy Journey

It was back in October 2014 when I first met Hoggy. At this time I had just suffered the biggest crisis of confidence imagineable. My horse was out on loan, my stables were empty and I was on the point of giving up horses altogether. I happened to see a flyer advertising lessons on Hoggy. I had always been intrigued by learning on a computerised, mechanical horse and he was only 20 minutes from me so I thought why not give it a go?

Upon arriving at Sparrow I was immediately impressed. My lesson took place in a warm comfortable building, out of the wind and rain. Hoggy proved enlightening. It was nice to sit on something which I knew would not buck rear, spook or spin and responded perfectly to my aids (when I got them right). I was able to work on my own body without worrying about what was happening with the horse. Of course more lessons followed. Fast forward a while and I was looking for another horse.

Tess arrived at Sparrow some time later after an extensive search. Recently over from Ireland, she was not the schoolmaster I had envisaged but was bought because of her outstanding temperament. I can remember saying at that time I would be thrilled if I could get to elementary level.

Not only have I reached my goal, I have surpassed it. Thanks to Nicola, Hoggy and the team at Sparrow we are now working confidently at elementary with our aim being medium by the end of the year. Hoggy you have saved a lifetime passion for horse from being lost forever to a confidence crisis. I cannot thank you enough.
